Rosehip, the fruit that develops after a wild rose's petals fall, has been used in European folk medicine for centuries. Its most striking historical moment came during World War II, when Britain, cut off from imported citrus fruit, organized large-scale public rosehip collection to produce rosehip syrup as a vital source of vitamin C for the population.
Modern research interest in rosehip has shifted toward joint health specifically, driven by a particular galactolipid compound (branded GOPO) shown to have anti-inflammatory properties relevant to osteoarthritis.
Rosehip has real meta-analysis-level evidence for osteoarthritis pain specifically. A 2008 meta-analysis pooling three randomized controlled trials (287 patients) found rosehip powder significantly reduced pain scores compared to placebo, with patients taking rosehip roughly twice as likely to respond to treatment. The effect was consistent across all three trials, a reassuring sign the trials were capturing the same real phenomenon.
The important caveat: all three trials included in that meta-analysis were funded by the same manufacturer (Hyben-Vital International) — a real conflict-of-interest concern worth knowing. The meta-analysis authors themselves described the results as based on a "sparse amount of data" and called for "independent replication in a future large-scale/long-term trial." Given a real, consistent effect but a genuine single-funder concentration, "Limited-Moderate" is the honest rating.
