Maitake, meaning "dancing mushroom" in Japanese, earned its name from the celebratory dancing that reportedly erupted among foragers upon finding one in the wild, where specimens were once valued at their weight in silver. It grows in distinctive large clusters at the base of oak trees and has been valued in Japanese and Chinese traditional medicine for centuries as an immune tonic.
Maitake's key studied compound, a beta-glucan called the "D-fraction," was isolated by Japanese researcher Hiroaki Nanba in the 1980s after he observed unusually strong immune-related activity compared to other mushroom extracts.
Maitake has real, if limited, human clinical trial evidence for immune function specifically. A controlled trial in postmenopausal women found maitake supplementation improved several immune function markers, including natural killer cell activity, compared to placebo over 4 weeks. A Phase I/II trial in breast cancer patients found dose-related immune changes with no serious adverse events, supporting further research.
For maitake's other major traditional claim — blood sugar management — the evidence is considerably weaker. Reviewers describe available human data as "small, early, and needing larger trials," with much of the supporting evidence limited to a small clinical case report rather than robust randomized controlled trials. Given genuine but modest human immune-function trials, and explicitly early-stage evidence for blood sugar claims, "Limited" is the accurate rating — a smaller evidence base than turkey tail or reishi elsewhere in this Atlas.
