Agaricus blazei has a genuinely unusual modern origin story compared to most mushrooms in this Atlas: rather than tracing back centuries of Asian traditional medicine, it was identified by Japanese researchers in the 1960s and 70s after they observed notably low cancer rates in a farming community near Piedade, Brazil, where the mushroom grew wild and was traditionally consumed.
This discovery drove substantial Japanese cultivation and research investment, and the mushroom (known in Japan as Himematsutake) became a significant subject of immune and cancer-adjunct research, particularly in the context of supporting patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Agaricus blazei has real human randomized controlled trial evidence, though with a genuinely mixed pattern of results. A double-blinded clinical trial in 40 patients with multiple myeloma undergoing high-dose chemotherapy found the extract produced measurable changes in immune markers — but explicitly found "no statistically significant differences in treatment response, overall survival, and time to new treatment" between groups. Separately, South Korean research found gynecological cancer patients taking Agaricus blazei during chemotherapy experienced fewer treatment side effects and improved natural killer cell activity.
A comprehensive 2008 scientific review concluded that "careful clinical studies... are still necessary to determine whether Agaricus blazei Murrill provides real clinical benefits" — and at the time, described only one human trial in the literature. Given genuine human RCT evidence showing real effects on immune markers, but explicitly null results on survival and treatment response in the most rigorous trial, "Limited" is the accurate, appropriately bounded rating.
