Physicians had observed for decades that sunlight and certain foods (notably cod liver oil) prevented and treated rickets, but the specific nutrient responsible wasn't chemically identified until the 1920s.
Unlike most entries in this Atlas, vitamin D is not a traditional herbal remedy but an essential nutrient your body largely produces itself through sun exposure. Its more recent, more contested research territory — respiratory infection prevention — is where honest evidence review matters most.
Vitamin D's role in bone health and calcium absorption is genuinely well-established, uncontested basic physiology. Its more actively-researched and more contested modern claim — preventing respiratory infections — tells a real, evolving scientific story. An earlier large individual-patient-data meta-analysis found a modest but statistically significant reduction in respiratory infections, particularly in people with low baseline vitamin D levels. However, a subsequent 2024/2025 updated analysis pooling data from over 64,000 participants found the confidence interval now crossed the threshold for statistical significance — concluding there was no longer clear evidence of overall protection.
A separate meta-analysis of 30 RCTs (30,263 participants) reached a similarly cautious conclusion: while some subgroup analyses showed apparent benefit, "such beneficial effects disappeared" when restricted specifically to the highest-quality studies. This pattern — real signal in some subgroups and earlier analyses, but a null result in the largest, most rigorous recent meta-analyses — is genuinely similar to cranberry's story elsewhere in this Atlas. "Limited-Moderate" reflects this honestly.
