Oregano oil has an unusually large gap between its laboratory evidence and its human clinical evidence. Laboratory studies consistently and robustly demonstrate strong antibacterial and antifungal activity — including against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains and Candida species — with carvacrol shown to disrupt microbial cell membranes at relatively low concentrations. This laboratory evidence is genuinely extensive and consistent.
The honest limitation: actual human clinical trial evidence remains genuinely scarce. One source tracking oregano oil research for Candida specifically notes human trial evidence is "limited to 85 total patients so far" across all available trials. Independent medical review sources state plainly that "human research is still limited" and that laboratory concentrations are much harder to replicate at the site of infection in the human body. Given robust laboratory evidence but a genuine scarcity of human clinical trials, "Limited" is the accurate rating.
