Grapefruit is a genuinely recent fruit by the standards of this Atlas — unlike most entries with millennia of documented traditional use, grapefruit first appeared in written records in 18th-century Barbados, as a natural hybrid between the pomelo and the sweet orange. It gained its name from the way the fruit grows in clusters on the tree, resembling bunches of grapes.

Grapefruit spread into commercial cultivation across Florida and other citrus-growing regions through the 19th and 20th centuries, and became particularly associated with 20th-century weight-loss diet culture — the famous "Grapefruit Diet" fad emerged in the 1930s.

Grapefruit's evidence for its most popular health claims is genuinely thin. A separate review on cholesterol specifically concludes plainly that "more studies are necessary."

The genuinely best-established fact about grapefruit is, notably, a safety concern rather than a benefit: grapefruit's interaction with medications is documented across more than 225 scientific publications, affecting over 85 different drugs through inhibition of the CYP3A4 enzyme in the intestines. This interaction can meaningfully increase blood levels of certain statins, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressants — a real, well-documented pharmacological effect that is, ironically, better substantiated than grapefruit's health benefit claims. "Limited" is the accurate rating, with real safety weight given to the interaction profile.
