Goji berry's modern Western popularity as a "superfood" is comparatively recent, driven substantially by its notably high concentration of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid compound now studied specifically for its role in eye health — the basis of goji's best modern evidence.

What clinical research actually shows

Goji berry has a genuinely interesting small human trial specifically for eye health: a randomized pilot trial found 13 healthy adults aged 45-65 who ate about an ounce of goji berries five times weekly for 90 days showed significant increases in macular pigment optical density — a real, measurable biomarker relevant to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) risk. Notably, a comparison group taking a commercial eye-health supplement over the same period showed no such increase.

The honest caveat: this remains pilot-level, small-sample research measuring a biomarker rather than actual disease outcomes, and a recent narrative review explicitly concluded that "larger, standardized studies are necessary" before firm conclusions can be drawn. Given genuine positive pilot data but explicitly early-stage status acknowledged by reviewers themselves, "Limited" is the accurate rating.
