Garlic is one of the oldest cultivated plants in human history, believed to have originated in the mountains of Central Asia before spreading across Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean thousands of years ago. It appears in some of the earliest medical texts ever written — Egyptian papyri from around 1550 BCE list garlic as a remedy for dozens of ailments, and it was reportedly fed to the workers who built the pyramids to sustain strength and stamina.
Ancient Greek and Roman physicians, including Hippocrates, prescribed garlic for respiratory and digestive complaints, while Roman soldiers carried it into battle believing it gave them courage and resilience. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda independently developed their own garlic traditions, using it for circulation and vitality. Garlic's spread across nearly every ancient civilization it touched — with strikingly similar conclusions reached independently — makes it one of the most consistently used remedies in recorded history.
Garlic has one of the stronger evidence bases of any traditional remedy, particularly for heart health. A comprehensive meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found garlic supplementation produced statistically significant improvements across a wide range of cardiovascular markers: reduced total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic), fasting blood glucose, and inflammatory markers, while modestly raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. An earlier, widely-cited meta-analysis of 20 trials found garlic lowered systolic blood pressure by an average of about 5 mmHg and diastolic by about 2.5 mmHg compared to placebo — a meaningful effect for a natural remedy.
Garlic also shows promise for blood sugar management: a meta-analysis of trials in people with type 2 diabetes found consistent, significant reductions in fasting blood glucose and improved cholesterol markers. The main caveats researchers flag: effects tend to be modest in already-healthy people (garlic works best for those with elevated baseline cholesterol or blood pressure), and preparation matters — aged garlic extract, garlic powder, and raw garlic aren't identical, and studies use different forms and doses. Still, garlic is one of the few traditional remedies with genuinely robust, consistent RCT support across multiple independent meta-analyses.
Traditionally eaten raw or lightly crushed to release allicin (its key active compound), cooked into food, or infused into oils and tonics. Many cultures developed "aged garlic" preparations — garlic left to ferment or steep over time — which remains a common supplement form today and was specifically studied in several of the trials above.
