The food of the gods

Cacao has been cultivated and consumed in Mesoamerica for over three thousand years, first by the Olmec civilization and later becoming deeply embedded in Maya and Aztec religious, ceremonial, and economic life — cacao beans were used as currency, and a bitter, spiced cacao beverage was reserved for nobility, warriors, and religious ceremonies rather than everyday consumption.

Cacao's scientific name, Theobroma, was assigned by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus and translates to "food of the gods." Modern research interest centers on cacao's exceptionally high flavanol content, a class of antioxidant plant compounds with real, measurable cardiovascular effects.

What clinical research actually shows

Cacao flavanols have one of the more substantial and consistent evidence bases in this Atlas for blood pressure specifically, replicated across numerous independent meta-analyses spanning over a decade. A meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials (297 participants) found cocoa products produced a mean reduction of 4.5 mmHg in systolic and 2.5 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. A separate, larger 2022 meta-analysis of 31 studies confirmed significant reductions in both measures, with dark chocolate outperforming cocoa beverages. The European Food Safety Authority has gone as far as officially recognizing a flavanol health claim at a specific minimum dose threshold.

An important, consistently-replicated nuance: the blood pressure benefit is concentrated specifically in people with elevated blood pressure — multiple meta-analyses found the effect was not statistically significant in people with already-normal blood pressure. This population-specific pattern, combined with the sheer number of independent confirming studies, is what earns cacao a "Moderate-Strong" rating.
