Brazil nuts grow exclusively wild in the Amazon rainforest — they have never been successfully cultivated on plantations at commercial scale, remaining dependent on a specific wild pollinator (a particular orchid bee) and a specific rodent (the agouti, one of the few animals capable of gnawing open the extremely hard outer pod) to reproduce naturally. Brazil nut's modern nutritional reputation rests heavily on a single, genuinely remarkable fact: it is the richest known dietary source of selenium, an essential trace mineral, making it a uniquely concentrated natural source for a nutrient otherwise difficult to obtain from food alone in some regions.

EVIDENCE STRENGTH: LIMITED–MODERATE

What clinical research actually shows

Brazil nut has consistently strong, well-replicated evidence for one specific, uncontested effect: raising blood selenium levels. A meta-analysis of 8 randomized controlled trials found Brazil nut consumption significantly increased both plasma selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity (a selenium-dependent antioxidant enzyme) — a genuinely solid, mechanistically well-understood, and consistently replicated finding.

Where the evidence becomes more mixed is on downstream claims often attached to this selenium boost, particularly cholesterol. One dedicated randomized controlled trial (77 patients) found Brazil nut flour significantly reduced total cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol over 90 days. However, a separate meta-analysis pooling multiple trials found no significant effect on total cholesterol, HDL, or LDL cholesterol overall. Given genuinely strong evidence for its core selenium-raising effect, but real inconsistency on the downstream cholesterol claim, "Limited-Moderate" reflects both findings honestly.
